Part Two takes up the story from the point at which Vietnam declared its independence from France in 1945 to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident (1964):

• 1946: Vietnamese nationalists begin war for independence from France
• 1954: Hanoi-based Vietnamese nationalists defeat the French
• 1954: US installs anti-communist Diem regime in Saigon
• Eisenhower originates the "Domino Theory"
• 1954: Geneva Accords effectively divide Vietnam
• 1954: First US counterintelligence troops arrive in Vietnam
• 1955: Saigon regime refuses to hold elections called for in Geneva Accords
• 1957: Insurgent process of liberation of South from US influence begins with backing from the North
• 1957-64: War between North and South heightens; US sends increasing numbers of military “advisors” to aid South
